This is session seven of the program, on organizing to foster interdependency. It sits inside a larger arc of drivers of humanized growth that runs through grounding, reimagining, focusing, organizing, and unleashing.

The session ran to a five-part agenda: an introduction, IRG and expert learning, practitioner learning, a coached breakout, and a debrief and close.

Key findings

  • The previous session established the problem this one answers: 70 percent of all transformation efforts fail, and the deck attributes that to approaches that are not human-centric.
  • On driving systemic change to create stakeholder value, the two groups compared are far apart, at 69 percent against 9 percent.
  • Working interdependently across functions and departments shows a similar spread, 67 percent against 7 percent.
  • Internal connection is reported as a multiple rather than a percentage: 3.5 times more connections with other functions, and 5.5 times more connections with senior leaders.
  • External connection is measured in three directions: industry collaboration, collaboration with NGOs, and collaboration with government and public institutions, where the figures are 66 percent and 46 percent.

Why transformation fails, and the eight steps offered against it

The change model carried into this session has eight steps. It begins by creating a sense of urgency, building a guiding coalition, and forming a strategic vision.

It then moves to enlisting a volunteer army, enabling action by removing barriers, generating short-term wins, sustaining acceleration, and instituting change.

Where the session sits in the program

The program runs in three phases. Connect happens in New York and Oxford in January, covering the business case for humanized growth, the drivers of humanized growth, the leadership role of marketing, the Da Vinci growth leader, personal purpose, and impact planning.

Develop runs bi-weekly on Zoom from February to May, moving through roots and heritage, stakeholders, the utopian role of business, market strategy, aspirational transformation, building holistic strategy, driving transformation, fostering interdependency, and building capability. Launch is in Cannes in June.

The outside voices in this session were Linda Booth Sweeney, an author, and Norman de Greve, a CMO. The session closed with a coached breakout and pointed to sparring sessions.

Scope and limitations

The figures are presented on slides as paired numbers without a stated sample or a definition of the two groups being compared, so they should be read as session material rather than as a full statistical report.
