The Institute for Real Growth and Oxford’s Future of Marketing Initiative at the Saïd Business School jointly led what they describe as the world’s first C-suite study focused on capturing what it takes to win in the shift from shareholder to stakeholder growth.

The study was produced with an advisory board and partners representing key C-suite functions, including board members, CEOs, CHROs, CCOs and CMOs.

Key findings

  • The evidence base is three-part: interviews with more than 475 senior business people and experts, more than 750 survey contributions from 52 countries, and an AI analysis of publicly available research and data.
  • The study covers four things: winning stakeholder growth strategies, how impact is best measured and communicated, essential leadership attitudes and habits, and the role of different C-suite functions.
  • Its central output is a set of five key drivers of humanized growth that separate over-performing organizations from their counterparts, offered as a framework for strategies that prioritize all stakeholders.
  • Working with Spencer Stuart, IRG identified the leadership attitudes and habits behind the pivot from shareholder primacy to broader stakeholder value creation, and set out the characteristics C-suite leaders need in what it calls the Da Vinci CEO Profile.

Who stood behind it

The partners were chosen to cover each function of the C-suite landscape. They include the National Association of Corporate Directors, the Society for Human Resource Management, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, FGS Global and the Arthur W. Page Society.

The list continues through marketing and management bodies and academic centers: the Association of National Advertisers, The Marketing Society, The B Team, Spencer Stuart, WARC, KennedyFitch, Mindshare, the Yale Program on Stakeholder Innovation and Management, and the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business.

An advisory board of business leaders and academics worked alongside IRG on the fundamentals of improving stakeholder value, and helped turn the findings into a practical roadmap with frameworks and tools.

How it was published

The findings were released as a downloadable executive summary and taken on the road. Launch events were run across sixteen cities, from New York, Mexico City, Cape Town and Sao Paolo to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Istanbul, Penang, Mumbai, Cannes, Sydney, Prague, Stockholm, Tokyo and Shanghai.

Speakers could also be booked to present the study, and readers could subscribe to Seeds of Growth, IRG’s regular roundup of news and insight.

Scope and limitations

This document is the launch page copy for the study, still carrying production notes. It states the scope, the sample and the headline structure of the findings, not the findings in detail.
